The untanned skin of a shark or ray used as a covering material in bookbinding, usually green in color and covered with small hard bumps. Jane Greenfield notes in ABC of Bookbinding (Oak Knoll/Lyons Press, 1998) that the word may be derived from “chagrin,” the French term for goatskin with a hard pimpled grain.
