ENCROACHMENT (American Football)

What is ENCROACHMENT (American Football)?

ENCROACHMENT (American Football) meaning illegal advance by a defender into the neutral zone after the ready-to-play signal but before the snap; often called “off-sides” by non-officials; under high school rules, retreating out of the neutral zone before the snap does not negate the infraction; in college and pro rules, it does; see rules at each level for details; parents and fans at high school games often protest, “He got back” at officials who throw encroachment flags; it doesn’t matter at that level
