HASH

What is HASH?

HASH meaning field markings between which the ball must be placed for all free kicks and scrimmage plays; when a scrimmage or pass play ends outside the hash, the officials move the ball to the nearest hash before giving the ready-to-play signal; in the NFL, they are coincident with the uprights of the goal post; in college, they are 60 feet from the sideline; in high school and youth, they are 53 feet 4 inches from the sidelines and divide the field into equal thirds; approximately 85% of all scrimmage plays originate from the hash marks
